Synopsis

This CME-accredited session explores the critical role of the gut microbiome in shaping response and resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with solid tumors. It examines the impact of antibiotic use on treatment outcomes, highlighting the mechanisms underlying antibiotic-mediated resistance and the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in oncology care. The session also reviews emerging strategies to modulate the gut microbiome, including experimental approaches under investigation in clinical trials. Participants will gain insight into how microbiome-targeted interventions may enhance immunotherapy effectiveness and inform future clinical practice.

This activity is supported by an independent support grant from Biocodex Microbiota Institute, Seerave Foundation

Objectives

By the end of the session, the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the gut microbiome in mediating response and resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with solid tumors
  • Understand the causative role of antibiotic-mediated resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors and the principles behind antibiotic stewardship
  • Describe emerging strategies to beneficially shift the gut microbiome using experimental clinical trials
