Synopsis

This session provides a practical, case-based overview of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and related tauopathies, with a focus on recognising early clinical “hidden signs” that are frequently missed in routine practice. It places PSP within the broader tauopathy spectrum before exploring the clinical heterogeneity of PSP phenotypes and how this contributes to diagnostic delay. The discussion highlights updated diagnostic criteria and high-yield bedside red flags—such as early falls, gait freezing, axial rigidity, oculomotor abnormalities, and poor levodopa response—supported by real-world clinical cases and patient video examples. Disclaimer: Informed consent was obtained from all the patients for the educational medical use of this content.

This activity is supported by an independent support grant from Ferrer

Objectives

  • Describe the clinical relevance of tauopathies and other atypical movement disorders in routine neurological practice, including why early diagnosis is often challenging.
  • Recognize high-yield early clinical signs that may indicate an atypical parkinsonian syndrome, using practical bedside screening approaches.
  • Interpret case-based and video-based examples to support earlier clinical suspicion, timely referral, and appropriate next-step evaluation in patients with early movement disorder features.
