Synopsis

This CME-accredited session examines the evolving role of MRI contrast agents in modern diagnostic imaging and their impact on image quality, clinical decision-making, and patient safety. The session will review current developments in contrast agent design, including strategies to reduce gadolinium exposure, alongside updates in guidelines that are shaping clinical practice. It will also address common challenges in contrast selection, dosing, and risk assessment, highlighting gaps in confidence and decision-making in real-world settings. By integrating emerging evidence with practical guidance, this session aims to support clinicians in optimizing the safe and effective use of MRI contrast agents in routine practice. This independent medical education program is supported by an educational grant from Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Objectives

  • Summarise the limitations of current MRI contrast agents and the unmet need for novel contrast agents that maintain high efficacy with reduced gadolinium dosing
  • Differentiate current and next-generation MRI contrast agent strategies based on features including dosing, composition, relaxivity, and stability
  • Recall the clinical trial evidence for novel MRI contrast agents that aim to reduce gadolinium dosing while maintaining efficacy
  • Perform a risk-benefit analysis for each patient when prescribing and dosing an MRI contrast agent involving assessment of clinical indication, feasibility, appropriateness and necessity while considering patient characteristics and risk factors
