Synopsis

This course is part of a series of three post-congress courses of the World Muscle Society (WMS), designed to translate into clinical practice the main advances presented in the field of pediatric neuromuscular disorders. This first course provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the fundamental principles underlying the approach to these conditions. The program focuses on building a solid foundation in the diagnostic approach, integrating clinical, genetic, and neurophysiological aspects. It reviews the main clinical signs and red flags suggestive of neuromuscular disease in childhood, as well as advances in genetic diagnosis and their impact on clinical practice. Special attention is given to early identification of these conditions and to the importance of longitudinal patient follow-up. Through a practical and decision-oriented approach, this course lays the groundwork for further exploration in subsequent courses, including more advanced diagnostic aspects and emerging therapeutic strategies.

Objectives

  • Identify the main clinical features and warning signs suggestive of pediatric neuromuscular disorders.
  • Understand current diagnostic approaches, including the role of genetic testing and neurophysiological studies.
  • Recognize available therapeutic options, including advanced therapies, and their implications for patient management.
