Synopsis

ALK inhibitor therapy has transformed the treatment journey for patients with ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), with many patients now receiving long-term oral therapy. This places increasing importance on effective patient and care-partner education, early recognition of adverse events (AEs), and timely communication with the healthcare team. This practical CME programme is designed for oncology healthcare professionals across Latin America and focuses on the clinical conversations and collaborative strategies that can help patients and care partners navigate ALK inhibitor therapy with greater clarity and confidence. Through three concise modules, learners will explore how to prepare patients for treatment, support proactive recognition and reporting of AEs, and coordinate their management through multidisciplinary or referral-based care. Particular attention is given to the realities of clinical practice across Latin America, including differences in access to laboratory testing, imaging, specialist follow-up and multidisciplinary support. The programme emphasises practical, patient-centred communication and strategies that can be applied in routine clinical encounters to support quality of life and continuity of care.

This activity is supported by an independent grant from Pfizer

Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better prepared to:

  • Use structured communication approaches to prepare patients and care partners for starting ALK inhibitor therapy, including setting expectations and clarifying roles in symptom monitoring.
  • Implement proactive strategies for early AE recognition by counselling patients and care partners on what to watch for, when and how to contact the care team between visits, and when to seek timely assessment.
  • Apply collaborative approaches to AE management by involving the multidisciplinary team (MDT) or referral network as appropriate and incorporating patient preferences into management decisions throughout ALK inhibitor treatment.
  • Adapt patient preparation and monitoring strategies to local healthcare constraints, including variable access to imaging, laboratory testing, and specialist follow-up, to reduce preventable treatment interruptions and support continuity of care.
