Practical DMD Course 11. Rehabilitation in DMD

Accredited (Credits: 0.5)

Audio: Spanish
Subtitles: English +1

Synopsis

Rehabilitation is a cornerstone of multidisciplinary care in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), playing a critical role in preserving function, preventing complications, and maintaining quality of life throughout the disease course. As progressive muscle weakness affects mobility, respiratory function, posture, and independence, rehabilitation strategies must evolve according to the patient's functional stage and clinical needs. This course provides a practical overview of rehabilitation management in DMD, beginning with the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying functional decline and the tools used to monitor disease progression. Participants will review evidence-based interventions aimed at preventing contractures, maintaining mobility, optimising musculoskeletal health, and supporting activities of daily living. The course also explores respiratory rehabilitation, assistive technologies, orthotic management, occupational therapy, speech and swallowing interventions, and the importance of coordinated multidisciplinary care to maximise functional outcomes and patient autonomy.

This activity is supported by an independent support grant from Italfarmaco

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the functional consequences of progressive muscle weakness in DMD and the tools used to monitor disease progression.
  • Apply rehabilitation strategies aimed at preventing contractures, preserving mobility, and maintaining musculoskeletal function.
  • Recognise the role of respiratory rehabilitation, assistive devices, and adaptive interventions throughout the different stages of DMD.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary rehabilitation approaches to optimise autonomy, participation, and quality of life in patients with DMD.
