Synopsis

Milk kefir is increasingly popular, but what does the evidence reveal about its potential health benefits? This accredited course provides a concise, evidence-based overview of kefir and its relevance to clinical practice. Explore how fermented foods may influence gut health through their food constituents, fermentation products and microorganisms. Learn what defines milk kefir, how kefir grains are formed, and why microbial composition can vary considerably between products. The course critically examines the available clinical evidence, including findings related to gastrointestinal health, constipation, cholesterol levels and weight management. It also highlights important limitations in current research, helping you distinguish promising results from claims that require further investigation and communicate balanced, scientifically grounded guidance to patients.

This activity is supported by an independent support grant from Danone

  • Evaluate the current clinical evidence on the potential gastrointestinal, metabolic and immune-related effects of kefir
  • Recognise the limitations of the available evidence and the factors affecting its interpretation, including variability in kefir composition and study design
