Synopsis

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a heterogeneous group of pulmonary disorders that may progress to fibrosis, functional decline, and a significant reduction in quality of life. Early identification of disease progression and the implementation of structured follow-up strategies are essential to optimise clinical management and improve patient outcomes. This course provides a practical and up-to-date review of the criteria used to assess ILD progression, the available monitoring tools, and the specific considerations involved in the follow-up of different patient populations, including those with connective tissue disease-associated ILD. In addition, the course explores a holistic approach to ILD care through the ABCDE model, highlighting the importance of individualised assessment, structured patient support, symptom management, comorbidity management, disease-modifying treatments, and advance care planning. Finally, the course examines key elements required to implement multidisciplinary, patient-centred care pathways within ILD programmes. PC-BE-105316-02/2026

This activity is supported by an independent support grant from Boehringer Ingelheim

Objectives

  • Describe the current criteria used to identify and assess progression in interstitial lung disease, as well as the main tools available for monitoring disease evolution.
  • Recognise the specific considerations involved in the management and follow-up of different forms of progressive ILD, including connective tissue disease-associated ILD.
  • Apply the ABCDE model to deliver holistic, patient-centred care, including symptom management, comorbidity management, and supportive care interventions.
  • Evaluate the role of disease-modifying therapies, advance care planning, and multidisciplinary approaches in the management of ILD.
