Synopsis

This educational session marks the 20th anniversary of EMA approval of the first HPV vaccine and explores the journey from Harald zur Hausen’s Nobel Prize discovery to the WHO 90–70–90 cervical cancer elimination vision. The session covers lessons from high-performing HPV vaccination programs worldwide, modernising cervical cancer screening from cytology to primary HPV screening and biomarker-driven approaches, and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HPV-associated anal lesions. An interdisciplinary roundtable discussion brings together experts to address current challenges and future directions. This activity is supported through a sponsorship from MSD.

Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the historical milestones of HPV vaccination and cervical cancer elimination
  • Evaluate lessons from high-performing HPV vaccination programs and identify strategies to improve coverage
  • Apply knowledge of modern cervical cancer screening approaches, including primary HPV screening and biomarker-driven methods
  • Identify diagnostic and preventive pathways for HPV-associated anal lesions
