Synopsis

This CME-accredited session explores the early presentation of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neuron spectrum disorders, which often begin with subtle, focal, or atypical symptoms that may be mistaken for common musculoskeletal, peripheral nerve, or benign neurological conditions. These early features can contribute to delays in diagnosis and referral, limiting timely access to specialist care, multidisciplinary support, and emerging therapies. The session will examine early signs across motor, bulbar, respiratory, and cognitive domains, with a focus on improving clinical recognition and differentiation from common mimics. Through a practical, case-based approach, participants will gain insights into identifying key red flags, navigating differential diagnosis, and initiating appropriate first-line investigations and referrals. Disclaimer: Informed consent was obtained from all the patients for the educational medical use of this content.

This activity is supported by an independent grant from Ferrer

Objectives

  • Identify early clinical red flags suggestive of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motor neuron disorders across motor, bulbar, and non-motor domains.
  • Differentiate ALS from common neuromuscular and structural mimics, including radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and myopathy, based on clinical patterns and progression.
  • Apply an appropriate initial diagnostic approach, including the use of electrophysiological studies (EMG/NCS) and imaging, in patients with suspected motor neuron disease.
  • Determine when timely referral to a neuromuscular or ALS specialist is warranted to reduce diagnostic delay and optimize patient management.
